Generation Z emerging in Turkey

Updated: Apr 13, 2020

Today, the population of the Z generation constitutes almost 30 percent of Istanbul’s total population, which is an increase compared to their number 6 years ago - 23 percent.

New generations have been classified as generations X, Y, and Z - where X generation is represented by people born between the years 1965-1979 and Y generation is represented by people born between the years 1980-1999. Z generation comprises the individuals born after 1996 or, according to some, 2000.

What attributes differentiate Gen Z from the previous generations?

Sean Mahoney, editorial director at advertising agency Sparks and Honey states that generation Z differs from previous generations in that its members have grown up with smartphones and the internet, making them more focused on speed of service. Many also saw their parents struggle during the Great Recession, making them more risk-averse.

That caution could carry over to their careers and personal finances, making them less willing to take risks. Gen Z is expected to be more pragmatic than millennials, realizing opportunities aren’t boundless and that they need to master in-demand skills, in the words of Anne Boysen, who calls herself a futurist and even named her Texas consulting business After the Millennials.

“They like to digest information faster and faster, often through videos and things like Snapchat, so their attention spans will be even lower than millennials,” said Daria Taylor, co-founder of Talented Heads, a digital marketing and youth insights agency in London.

One characteristic of Gen Z is their flexibility, their ability to work on multiple things, according to Michael Crones, CIO of Draper. He refers to how the individuals of Gen Z get things accomplished at a time where they wok on something for you on a laptop, have a conversation and watch TV, remarking this multitasking talent as ‘impressive’.

Dell Technologies addresses to Generation Z, reporting they are tech-savvy, digital natives to the core, on their website. They bring new skills, high expectations and a desire to shake things up.

The number of generation Z in Istanbul has almost amounted to 30 percent

Istanbul University (IU) Director of City Policy Application and Research Center Dr. Murat Şeker remarked, "The youngest and most dynamic generation of society in the Z generation, 5 years ago, covered 23 percent of the population of Istanbul, today, this rate is close to 30 percent. Traditional generation and the X-generation is decreasing gradually, while the Y generation continues to exist.

This situation shows that the coming Z generation will get hold of the city gradually. "

To have a better insight into Generation Z and its future plans, Dell Technologies conducted a global study and interviewed more than 12,000 young people between the ages of 16 and 23.

According to Dell Technologies' global research, the Z Generation possesses a deep cognizance of universal technology as well as the potential of transforming technology into our ways of working and living.

Turkey’s generation Z desires to work up technology

Research results of Turkey voiced striking results and, "Compared to their peers around the world, a much more confident and technology-curious generation emerges in Turkey. For them, working with the latest technologies plays a crucial and decisive role”, said the Dell EMC Turkey General Manager Sinan Dumlu.

Under the light of the studies of Dell Technologies:

57 percent of the Z generation in Turkey, exceeds the world average, with their will to work in areas where technology is being developed such as research and development.

86 percent of Turkish students show interest in working with the latest technology. 66 percent of the Z generation in Turkey specify that they would prefer technology provided work among the working environments with all other conditions kept at the same level. It is noted that in the United States the rate of students with the same opinion is only 37 percent.

Almost half of the surveyed students in Turkey displayed their optimism by stating their expectations on the integration of technology and human force. They foresee, ‘customer services will leave their seats to technology in 2030, with enhanced functions’.

We trust YouTube, rather than our friends and families

The world-wide Z generation prefers to receive advice from different groups when they need to do something for the first time. Based on the studies conducted by Dell Technologies, in the UK, friends are consulted and older people are trusted in France. However, in Turkey, the majority of the individuals of generation Z said they would go through YouTube videos primarily when they have any work piece to be completed.

It is also noted that their fondness for technology prevents them from having as much face-to-face contact. Justified by the reports of Dell Technologies, while 47 percent of the young people in the U.S. prefer in-person contact, only 31 percent of their peers in Turkey do so. Most of them prefer to use the telephone and email for communication.
